Captain Angleterre

Maurice Druon wrote a series of six historical novels about Philip the Fair and his progeny (France, end of 1200's through 1300's). One of Philip's children was Edward II's wife. Others include Louis X, Philip V and a Charles. Philip the Fair is also the king responsible for the destruction of the Templars. The series is called The Accursed Kings, based on a curse placed on Philip's line by de Molay, the head of the Templars, who was burned by Philip. Eventually all this led to the 100-Year War.
On Earth 305, one of Philip's kids became King of England, through Edward II's wife or her children (details are not yet known), and England became a French possession, like Aquitaine was an English possession at that time.
From there the land we know as England became known as Angleterre, which eventually gained its independence in a war at the time of the French revolution. It stayed Monarchic while France became Republican.
Contemporaneously, Merlin and Roma (Roma is a made-up name, but that's what it would be in French anyway; in fact, Merlin is the French name, coopted into English ... the celtic name would be something like Myrddhin) in the city of Londres, granted the young man Arthur Mitouret the choice between the sword and the amulet, and the lad took the name Capitaine Angleterre.
