FOREIGN HEROES (EUROPE AND THE AMERICAS)

Some from America (Comics), others from France (La bande dessinee), Germany (Bilderstreifen or Bildergeschichter), Italy (Fumetti), Argentina (Historietas), Brazil (Quadrinhos) and Spain (Tabeos).

Some relevant books which are still in print (excluding X-Men titles) are orderable directly; see individual listings below. Loki's An International Catalogue of Superheroes is the best general resource on the subject. Jorge de la Cruz's Home Page includes the Hispanic, Native American, Black and Asian Supers lists. Balch Institute-Ethnic Images in the Comics presents a series of fascinating and erudite articles about ethnic heroes and others. The Global Guardians, DC's defunct team of token superheroes, has their own webpage now which includes a timeline for the team. The Good Guys & Gals Of The Golden-Age Art Gallery has monthly rotating features on a variety of characters, and usually features a couple from the UK or elsewhere. Marvel Europe has its own set of pages detailing mostly translated material. Museum of Black Superheroes has a variety of articles and character bios. Salute to Pioneering Cartoonists of Color offers brief bios and samples from early black cartoonists. Yahoo! Clubs: International Comics Club is a center for discussing many of these characters.

note: there is an unnamed member of the International Delegaton of Masked Archers (Green Arrows of the World) with a turban (Indian?) and another with a keffiyeh (Arabic?) headdress

note: Captain Rip Carter's Black Phantoms, of which the Boy Commandos were the mascots, were presumably an international team.

note: Captain Daring & the Sky-Sharks worked in England - a Blackhawks rip-off, obviously, with multicultural air aces, but they did exist in Timely's books in the 1940s. The Victory Boys were Boy Commando rip-offs - but they existed, too, during the 1940s. NORTH AMERICA Canada DC. . . .
